SCN is combining its efforts with Amnesty International and the AV club to host the Help for Haiti Telethon. The event will be held at the high school from 6 - 10pm on Friday, February 26. And since the event was opened up to the school community at large, the support has been pouring in.
The telethon is now an All-Club event as BSU, the Spanish Club, GSA, the Italian Club, the music department and several humanities classes, and officers from the Senior Class, SMAC and DECA are all on board to contribute to this fundraiser. All clubs or sports teams in the school are invited to lend their support and help to make this night an opportunity to pull our resources together and raise the much needed funds for the country of Haiti.
There will be a variety of talent displaying their skills during the telethon. Four local bands will supply musical talent and will be joined by an acapella group from the music department. Routines will be performed from the cheerleaders, Dance Teams and Step Squad. The evening will also feature several speakers, including representatives from the American Red Cross and several Haiti relief organizations and missionaries. The faculty and students will also battle it out in a volleyball game.
Besides the traditional telethon that asks viewers to call in pledges, this year’s telethon will add a “Jail ‘n’ Bail.” Key community leaders will be “arrested” and brought to a makeshift “jail” at the high school. After being “locked up,” they will be given a phone and asked to make a prescribed “bail” in order for them to be released. All money received from the bail will be added to the telethon totals.
But that’s not all. The night will also see the cafeteria house a Food Court where magnificent meals and sumptuous snacks donated from local restaurants will be for sale. So don’t forget to bring your appetite (and some extra cash).
But it doesn’t stop there. You’ll want to drop by the MPR and participate in the Tricky Tray. Local merchants, corporations and leaders of local organizations as well as a group of parents have donated various items to be available in this “silent auction.” Prize baskets include items from Dunkin Donuts, Barnes and Noble, as well as theme baskets including Movie Night, Disney, Family Games, Teen Make-Up and a Cooking Basket. More baskets are still in the works and may include Nets tickets and gift certificates form local stores and restaurants.
The Help for Haiti telethon is shaping up to be an event that will not only raise money to help the people of Haiti, but it will provide an opportunity for all of us to help others and have fun doing it.
Mark your calendars!! And keep Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.
